Ubuntu lagging on Virtual Box

Posted 07 March 2013 - 01:24 PM

I love Ubuntu, and I really want to learn linux. The best way for me was to install Ubuntu on VirtualBox, it's easy and I can run Windows at the same time. There's one thing that I dont like with VB, and it's that I can't run Ubuntu "smooth", also without lagging. It's kind of impossible for me to run Chromium Browser. I can, but some big websites takes ages to load, and when it's finished, I can't do anything because of the lags. Running Linux commands on the terminal is fine, but there's times when I run full screen mode and start doing my work there. I have PDF's open, a document writer, terminal and Google.

One of my solutions is to create a new partition and run dual boot with Windows, but I would like to run both OS at the same time.
VMWare is another solution. I tried it, it's so much better! But I can't see the battery life there, the icon is gone and the command ACPI doesn't work either. I did install it, but it won't run somehow.

Is there somehting I can do to reduce/remove the lagspikes on VB? I have installed the guest additions, didn't fix my problems.

My laptop specs: i5 3210m processor, 8GB RAM, full HD, Nvidia GPU.
Ubuntu 12.04 specs on VB:
- Base memory: 1024MB,
- 1 processor,
- enabled nested paging and VT-x/AMD-V
- 128MB VRAM, Enabled 3D Acceleration

Also offtopic: How can I run wireshark on VB? It won't find any capturing devices or something.

Thanks!

More like add.. add more RAM at it and see what happens.

Agreed. My hardware has 16 gig of RAM, and I allocate
  • 10 gig to my development VMware workstation,
  • 2gig to a second VM for testing on a minimally equipped box,
  • leaving 4 gig for the host OS to host everything.

Try installing a command-line only build (or just kill the windowing) That'll reduce the demand considerably, and you should be able to get along fine with your current setup. That way, too, you're really focusing on the interesting part, which is the command line. That's what makes linux a powerful OS. Moving a mouse around is more or less the same as moving a mouse around on any OS, and you already know how to do that.

By the way, the Free Software Foundation has a good introduction to the command line, which is available as a free download, as with all of their publications.
