Favorite Free Web CMS's

Posted 11 March 2013 - 08:16 PM

I have a website that I picked up to start a blog/portfolio on. I put Wordpress on it to get started quick, but when my plans changed, it went unused for a long while, so I just purged it to start fresh.

I'm working with a group at my University on their new website, using Drupal. I'll probably put that on a sub-domain on my site as a playground. But I'm thinking of toying around with developing a personal site again. I'm at a beginner to intermediate level of understanding with the core languages (HTML/CSS/JS/PHP). And my goal with this will be to just better myself as a developer, while having an interesting platform to work with down the road if I have enough stuff to make a code portfolio out of.

So, what free CMS' do you all like? :smile2:/>

One obvious choice. :D I'm trying to expand my horizons; for example, someone elsewhere mentioned Textpattern and Typo3, neither of which I had heard of. There was also MODx. It's easy enough to load a CMS into a local development environment, and I've already tried a couple out to see what I like/don't like.

I like Drupal. It has huge community and there are tons of modules that speed up your website building process. It offers more than for example Wordpress or Joomla, but that comes with higher learning curve.

I prefer my own custom built system. Costs me nothing but time.

As for this assessment, I don't entirely agree. It's pretty much on-par with Joomla (in my CMS test from a few years back, I preferred Drupal of the two, but Joomla was selected as being more user friendly for the non-techies who will ultimately be making the updates). I've included an infographic show just how similar the two really are:

Funny graphics :). But yeah... I do agree with you that Joomla is more user friendly.
