Linux is all about learning and experimentation in my opinion. I use it, and I love it. I agree 100% with trying it out on a VM before actually installing it. To me it just makes things "less messy" if you do it that way. Best of luck.

At University, they make us use Linux to learn to program in.
I have both Windows and Linux installed (Windows for gaming, Ubuntu so I can have a linux environment similar to Uni's).

Since you're showing interest in Linux, I suggest starting off with something comparitively easy. Ubuntu or Mint would be the two best options, I think. Debian is another choice, but I've never used it so I don't know the ease-of-use. I suggest either finding a secondary machine that you don't mind wiping its hard drive and installing Linux on, or install it in a virtual environment such as Virtualbox or VMWare. They do essentially the same thing. I suggest using it from time to time, and once you get comfortable with it, make an informed decision. linux.org has three great courses on getting to know Linux. The first one is simply to get you comfortable in the new environment. After that, it gets a bit more in-depth.

My two cents on the subject spells dualboot. You choose on boot which system you like to use. I use this because some program or websites only works with Windows (Internet Explorer looked log in system).
I found a great article about dualboot. What I like about the article is that the author writes about the stable and long term supported Ubuntu 12.04 and the most popular Windows OS right now, the s7ven.
