Finding the number of files in a map.

How do i find the number of files in a map? And would it be possible to make it platform-indepentend?

Use boost::filesystem if you want a platform independent way. Other way would be to use tons of preprocessor checks and make your code messy.
If you want for a particlar compiler and os , then let me know.
