Is it bad thing to ask salesperson...?

Posted 20 March 2013 - 04:49 PM

Hello.
I have a small software company .I ask sometimes salesmen what customers think about the software or what were the reasons customers preferred to switch to our software. (just to see the good things and what to work on and learn what competitors do).

But my partner gets really pissed and angry and abusive with me for this.
Is it unprofessional to ask such kind of questions ? He claims that this shows low self esteem and not believing in product.Maybe the problem with me is that i am not dominant at all.

So you think it is bad to have this behavior towards salesmen ?I should just command them and force them to obey and keep showing that my software is the best ever ?

Is This A Good Question/Topic? 0

Business partners shouldn't be abusive toward each other. THAT is unprofessional.

You need to know what your customers like and dislike in your product in order to make improvements and guide development in a profitable direction. If you don't know what features they like how do you decide what features to add and what features to drop?

It's important to understand what the customers want. The salespeople have insight into this, as they are the ones pitching the software to the clients. Seeking feedback is always a good idea.

Probably he believes they are going going to tell us what they want by themselves , we should not ask guys from sales and others etc. Like "could you image Steve jobs asking his salesmen what do they think about the product"
Also I talked with a guy who works for a competitor but wants to resell our software too, he hated that i asked him questions (like he did) about how they do some things.Unprofessional behavior to ask etc. And got pissed off when we discussed about some wifi network setups . He told me (what the f* were you asking him about the wifi network how roaming works fine etc )And that he would get a bad image of me and the company).

I believe that he is right to a point. I am not generally dominant at all neither I believe that I am the best and that I do everything perfect and I lack self esteem. And that is probably "wrong" for professional situations.

Maybe not, but you can bet that there were meetings and things discussed that were deemed important enough to bring up to the higer-ups were indeed sent through the proper channels.

You just have a shorter chain. Not as many links between the two ends.

Stupid things to say. You need to get feedback about your product in order to keep improving, and how are you going to get that? I think that the variant ask a customer will infuriate your partner)

If a customer does not like something about a product, it is always good to know as a manufacturer. So I don't think it is unpro for you to ask... You just simply want to improve your product, what that have to do with being professional and all?

Your partner is a dolt.

These salesmen, they work for you right? They're YOUR salesmen? Their job is to be the outward projection of confidence for the product. THEY keep up the image for you to the outside world.

What is your partner so afraid of? Inter-office image? What the employees think of the boss?

Are you from some other culture outside of America where this is normal? Where the boss must maintain an air of all knowing and supreme confidence?

Here, our culture expects confidence and knowledge from our bosses. We also expect that our boss gets that knowledge and confidence by listening to and understanding their employees.

You may connect to an end user opinion not using your sales department
