How To Simply Install-Deploy .xap File On Windows Phone

Posted 22 March 2013 - 05:18 PM

My goal is simply to deploy .xap file(s) that I have created to my Windows Phone.

When I use Windows Applicaton Deployment Tool and browse for my .xap file I receive an error message that the Zune software must be installed.
After installing the Zune software and browsing again for the .xap file, it gave me the same error message.
However, when I use the Windows Emulator option it deploys & runs just fine.

After researching several sites I came across the link below.
http://stackoverflow...-phone-7-device

However, I am still a little confused over I need to follow the steps mentioned in the link.
Should it matter if my phone is unlocked or not if all I plan to do is install .xap app files and not modify my phone in any other way?

I have all of the following (working and installed on my computer)
-Visual Studio 2012
-Windows Phone Emulator
-Windows Applicaton Deployment Tool
-Zune Software
-A New Windows Phone

I can debug-build all of my apps via VS and run all of my .xap files through the emulator and they work like a charm.

Using the Windows Applicaton Deployment Tool (@ this screen below) I am unable to successfully deploy to my actual phone (only to my emulator).

**Interesting Note**
What I found interesting is that the above screenshot says "Windows Phone Device" in the top target drop down option.
..Where as... the screenshot below says "Windows Phone 7 Device"
Does this mean I am running the wrong Windows Applicaton Deployment Tool?

Again, my main two questions are:..
1.) Am I missing a developer tool of some sort to upload my .xap files?
2.) Is it mandatory that I go through the unlocking process to publish-deploy .xap apps to my phone?

Any help will be appreciated as always.

What version of the SDK are you running?

What phone OS are you running (8, 7.5 vanilla 7)?

I just have Visual Studio '10&'12 and a new Windows Phone device. I'm using the Windows Phone 7 Emulator? As mentioned above I can deploy apps to the emulator but not the actual phone. I actually called Microsoft and they told me I needed to pay for the development kit software & membership for $99. Does that sound right?

1. Visual Studio version is not the same as the SDK version. Are you using the first 7 SDK or 7.1?
2. Can you give me the exact version of the OS? "New Windows Phone device" can be anything, but I am guessing Windows Phone 8.
3. Yes, in order to unlock a device, you need to have a paid Windows Phone Store membership. Do you have one?

You can use xap deployer 2.0 as a alternative to deploying xaps easily. find it here - Xap deployer 2.0
