What is Open Source

Posted 24 March 2013 - 02:31 PM

I am in an engineering club and we designed a robot and coded it using an integrated software known as RobotC. I don't have any problems with the actually code as far as getting the robot to do what I want it to do but I need to do a presentation on the software part of the robot and I would like to mention that RobotC is "Open Source" but if someone asks me, who is not familiar with developing code how could I dumb down the explanation of open source? Thank you in advance for any help.

Did you try typing "What is Open Source" into Google and exploring the links?

No C and C++ question; moving to Software Development

Yes I have, and I do understand what Open Source is but I was really looking for a "Dumbed down" description to include in my presentation. But thank you for your time.

The wiki entry is pretty well dumbed down.

To paraphrase - "Program code written by people and distributed freely to be modified or used by everyone".
