First off - install any DB you can get your hands on.. MSSQL express, MYSQL, mongo, etc. Know play with the admin rolls and watch db loads, know how to optimize queries, and read up (in books on db management) how to roll with what is thrown at you.

Second - of the jobs listed, DB analyst would be the closest and most helpful. Data entry and help desk are not quite in the wheel house of db management.

Yes.. that would be a preferably start than say a consumer of DB services like a help desk or rote data entry. Though it's not guaranteed of course - it is up to you to find a position and use it to your advantage, or a stepping stone, to being a dba.

... you start growing hair in odd places, your voice lowers, and you finally reach maturity?

Seriously.. come on.. "What if" - what? You are missing half the question!

Also, and this is just a issue with me this morning, you need to work on your communication skills. Complete sentences, punctuation, and clear thoughts help get the answers and direction you may need.

*sigh*

Since I don't know the second part of the 'what if' question all I can advise is you don't need permission to program. You are free to learn what you want!

Yes.. you can learn both - they are not mutually exclusive territories. Heck one may lend to helping understand a different perspective for the other.

Also is it true that java developers are more in demand because the recruiter was suggesting that i should do projects in java as to try to get a job as a java developer

Everyone is in demand.. java, .NET, etc.. if you want to see the demand for your area check the local job boards, or do a search on dice.com for your area.
