What is a state machine?

Posted 06 April 2013 - 11:40 PM

I've seen so many examples that my brain is fried. I've seen simple case switch statements and ones that are extremely complicated. How do I design this. I need to make a FSM that I understand. Basicly I've been asked to create a 2D platformer type game like megaman and I need to create the FSM for the enemy. The problem is in this project the core team hasn't provided me any requirements. I really need assistance, I feel that the enemy has only these states a spawned, Dead, attack, and patrol. But I've also seen idle, attack, chase, dead. I think both examples are basiclly the same just called differently. So can someone help me with understanding how to code this? Maybe by providing an example? thanks in advance.

This should do it for a 2D game, since it is for a 2D game. Good tutorial also. :)
