What major minor combination do you think is best?

Posted 08 April 2013 - 12:59 PM

I'm a Junior and I was previously PreMed for my first 2 years of undergrad but I really like math/cs way more. I want a combination of a major/minor that would be most applicable in the real world to score a job as I don't want to go to graduate school unless necessary.

I enjoy business, math, and computer science. Here are the options I have so far:

1. Computational Math & Statistics Dual Major with Actuarial Science Minor
2. Computational Math & Statistics Dual Major with Computer Science Minor
3. Statistics Major with Actuarial Science and Computer Science Minor
4. Computational Math Major with Actuarial Science and Computer Science Minor
5. Computer Science Major with Math or Actuarial Science Minor (Most credit intensive)

I'd be graduating with 5 years total of undergrad with any of the options above, but probably 5.5 years with a CS Major since I'm already a Junior.

Thanks.

Pick the one you enjoy most. All of those major options will be helpful in getting a job, provided you have the skillsets to back up your degree.

Context maaaaaaan! No one knows where you live, what your local job market looks like, what you want to do, what you have an aptitude for, your willingness to relocate, if you are down for internships, or your interpersonal skills.

This would, shockingly, be a better question for your school's councilors! You know - the ones in the thick and mix to really get in there good and deep to provide some quality tailored advice.

Oh sorry! I'd be willing to work anywhere for a job around the US. I have pretty good interpersonal skills, but as far as what I want to do, I'd probably like to work right out of undergrad in a trading firm in wall street doing algorithmic trading, but after a few years of that I'd really like to start my own company.

So what is it you have against the US economy? What did it ever do to you?

I'm just pulling your chain - we can have this argument in another thread, if you like. (but would urge you to consider a late addition to your list of possible minors - see if your school's philosophy department offers a conentration in ethics...)
