[link] Whatever Happened to Video Game AI?

A great look at the state of current game AI if you are so inclined to see what was, is, and where it may be going.

Quote

a future of human-like AI opponents that could adapt to the player's movements and actions didn't seem that far away.

But it never happened. From around the mid-2000s videogame AI nestled itself beneath a chest-high wall and has pretty much stayed there ever since. Even the best games of recent years have been criticised for their unimpressive AI. But is this sad ending to the story really true? Did AI programmers basically gave up at the turn of the millennium? Or have things simply evolved in more subtle ways less perceptible to the average gamer?

Nice article, but I don't think you need to worry about the AI going back to the 90s, everything has its ups and downs, game development included. Gems like Half-Life are one out of a million games of the generation, it's misleading to think that game AI in general was better "back in our day".

Games are also not shipped and done anymore, they get updates to improve the flaws, AI improvements sometimes included. The problem is the big publishing companies that care more about $$$ than genuine innovation and quality.

More gems will spawn and, as indie development is growing in popularity, are now more likely to be found than ever before.

Certainly.. and indeed it does swap with games genres, but after playing 'No One Lives Forever 2' and interacting with their goal-oriented autonomous character behavior I really thought we would be in a different place. *sigh*
