Spotify or Pandora

Posted 10 April 2013 - 09:04 AM

A fellow DIC user and I have been arguing for weeks on the topic of Spotify vs. Pandora so I wanted to see fellow dev opinion here. What makes one better than the other and why? Do you like Pandora because it's free (or cheap) or do you prefer Spotify for more features?

I used to use grooveshark.

I never used Pandora, from what I understand it's only radio stations though.

Currently I use Spotify. Mainly because I can play full albums by the bands I like, which is a requirement for me. I mainly listen to music by the album, not by the single. It also still has radio stations if I want it. The free version was nice enough, the ads were hardly intrusive. But I got the premium version for on my phone and to remove the ads. I haven't torrented an album since signing up.

I've used Pandora for years, because that's what I heard of and tried first. I've discovered quite a few artists that have made it into my regular rotation. I tend to buy albums from artists I like, that's just how I roll (I'm sure the fact that at one point I made my living off of album sales and "the door" has something to do with it...). But I'll have to try Spotify out, I didn't realize you could play albums on it. I, too, tend to listen by the album rather than the track, but that's probably because I tend to listen to artists who write by the album, rather than write a few hit singles and then 8 filler tracks....

EDIT: Your poll is misleading. The poll is "which do you use?" but the question you ask in the OP is "which is better?"

I could see how that would seem misleading. However, my original intent was two ask two questions. In the poll I wanted to know who used what, I was looking for an explanation in the comments as to why some felt one was better than the other as a poll doesn't allow for explanation of opinion. Since you mentioned you used to live off of album sales, you may want to look into Spotify not paying artists fairly before using it.

I use Pandora and my own site, tunejet.net. I didn't realize how cool Grooveshark was until recently, but I don't use it unless I'm grabbing music from it with an awesome tool called Groovedown. With the exception of the monthly listening quota and the fact that you can't permanently delete your stations, Pandora is an amazing service. And I was listening to it as I saw this thread. I sometimes use Spotify on my desktop, but the ads make me want to kick the silicon out of it. (I found out that you can avoid excessive Spotify ads by clicking on a new song right before one ends, but that gets annoying).

So what exactly is the advantage of ripping the tracks from grooveshark and keeping them on your own hard disk?

I use pandora, it is just what I got started with and I am too lazy to change now. My sister uses Pandora, spotify and 8-tracks though... I think she is a little over the top there.

@jon - because only lame-os or dorkwads pay for music. Not only do I want to hear it on the cheap, but I want to stick it to The Man a bit more by downloading it for free.

See, I stick it to the Man by making him host it for me - I'm not even paying for the disk space...

Next thing, The Man will be paying me to listen to this stuff.
