Question about all web pages.

Posted 10 April 2013 - 10:18 AM

Hey guys, i Dont have much knowledge about web development languages, But i have basics. I know html pretty well as i self learned from w3schools. I also know css. I Cant type a code in css but i understand the code and edit it.
You guys may feel this as a beginners question but its troubling me a lot and i need help.
I started making one page. The sPlash page. Then i did a homepage with a navbar on top. I did a community page with navbar and also couple of more pages of videos and photos. When i had to enter two more links of photo and video pages, i realised that i had to edit all the pages of the website. I didn't feel it a practical solution. Because i just cant use this method for hundred pages more. Even if i had to edit the footer image, it wasn't practical solution to this problem.

So my question is, can we host external html just the way we host .css files somewhere and link it to pages. So once i edit the html file the changes would be made in each And every page. In this case, I'll do the navbar coding in a separate file, link the file on each And every page. So once i edit the navbar source code file, changes would be applicable everywhere on each page.

In-short my point is can we make one single file which if edited will change all the pages Where it is linked.

This may sound bit silly or totally newbee question. But I'm stuck on this for almost half week, then i found this humble forum. Other forums had mean people. They didn't care to reply.

Hoping for a solution. :/ :)

Sure.. but you need to bump up a bit out of HTML.. this is common in PHP with 'content management systems', or in ASP.NET with 'master pages'. In regular HTML it would be a pain using the iframe.

Frameworks like django and rails also make this pretty easy, as well. In the bad old days you'd use a perl cgi, but we're well past that now.

Okay, this quick reply wasn't at all expected! Thanks for replies. So now I've to start with PHP?
Actually I've to complete this website in next month. Not a clients work, but my personal thing as a hobby. But gotta complete before college starts.
So taking time into consideration, do i have to start from basic or i can jump directly to content management? I mean no shortcuts in learning but still, i got a time limit.

I wish there was something like external .html hosting. :)

PHP is one way to do this, but it can be pretty painful. I'd steer you to django (python) or rails (ruby).

But I'm sure if you stick around for a few minutes, I'm sure you'll hear a lot of love for drupal or joomla or whatnot. At some point, it'll be up to you to evaluate the options and try one.

Yea correct. But isn't Drupal and Joomla platforms? Just like WP?

More to the point, they are ways to do what you want to do.

You won't hear any Joomla/Drupal love from me (though I use Joomla every day of my life)... I hate them. With the white-hot intensity of a thousand suns. What you will hear from me is a deep and abiding love of PHP. I adore PHP. There is no better way to spend a day than getting down-and-dirty with a hot little PHP script. That said, it can be confusing, complicated, frustrating, and difficult to get started using. I've played with Ruby-on-Rails a bit and it was quite fun and not nearly as difficult to understand at the outset. I look forward to the day when I have enough of that elusive "free time" to play with Ruby and Rails a bit more.

Okay. So took help of uncle Google. Got to know few points like it converts the html and css webpage into a base package and contents of the page can be altered without touching the main file. Am i right? I mean Joomla and Drupal are the platforms to convert the webpage into a base package what we can say as a theme or template. Whereas I'll need to do everything manually in Django or rails. Please correct me wherever i go wrong.

Django and Rails are platforms. Joomla and Drupal are content management systems.

Joomla and Drupal are written in PHP. They're designed for people who don't know how to write said PHP. You login to an admin panel, enter your content in the WYSIWYG editor and ta-da! magic website!

Django and Rails are a completely different animal.

I think folks have suggested quite a few things. You need to pick one that looks like it will work for you.

My money's still on the iframe.
