How many of you have worked at a call center (IT or not)?

Posted 17 April 2013 - 06:59 PM

I have an interview at one soon. It is not IT, but may lead up to tech support eventually. It is an inbound call job. I was wondering if any other DiC'ers have went through this job. I have no real professional computer skills so I am pretty limited to opportunities.

I rocked inbound credit card fraud for a substantial number of years. Four important things to remember:

1. read your scrips word for word.
1.a When you are comfortably numb to it all learn to multitask and do homework.
2. Make friends with everyone.
- sure they may be lifers but they are good folks.
3. Know the system of how your numbers are tracked.
- know the game and you know how to skirt edges when you need to.
4. Volunteer for any and all special projects.
- fall up the ranks.

I worked at one for a few years when I was younger... though I don't think I'll be of much help, it was an adult website and I took inbound calls on the contractor side. They gave me Russia and Romania, I could basically act/say whatever I pleased.

What modi says is very good advice.

I was a telephone support tech for a door access control company for about a year.
It was mostly boring as hell but it paid the bills.
Occasionally some security contractor would try to get out product to do something it was never designed to do and the whole tech department might get involved trying to figure out if it could do what they wanted. Those were the fun calls.

I went from the new guy to the lead rep in 3 months simply by reading all the manuals for the products we had and then trying crap tons of stuff out. I learned all the little quirks pretty fast and the bosses noticed experienced staff would come ask me things, so I got a promotion.

Call center work can be fun, but depending on your company it's just you getting yelled at for someone else's stupidity. Remember, kill em with kindness and don't let their crap get to you. It's a dirty job and someone has to do it. Might as well be you.

I sold holidays to Disney Land Paris.
Mostly I read books, because the calls just weren't coming in.
Then I had to leave and get something else, because it was costing me a fortune in books...

I worked with support for Apple. Colleges were great but the work not so much because I had no time to learn the stuff and privately, I do not like Apple. Why? It cost to much. Give me a cheap ass Compaq/HP for 300-400 US dollars and Ubuntu 12.04 and I will be happy.

So in the middle and the end, I gave support on stuff that I hardly have used and thous, did not give good support.

My bosses tried to help me but the whole department was flooded with calls and that mean no time to train.

I did tech support for 7 years. Find what enjoyment you can in it. Remember that whatever you're doing is still customer service and you won't go wrong.

I do internet and phone support for comcast.

The sooner you lose your soul or the ability to care you're going to do great at a call center.

I'm another (former) call centre worker. Startde out in outbound sales, so was phoning people to try to sell them extras for their phone lines. After a miserable few months there, I moved onto the broadband helpdesk, where I managed to get myself into trouble for helping a customer. It seemed that the term 'broadband helpdesk' really had nothing to do with helping the customer after all, it was just a place to run run line tests and refer customers elsewhere.

So, anyways, I got this call from a guy who was having problems with his internet. After hearing him out, I knew what the problem was since I had had exactly the same issue with my PC about a week prior to this. So, I told him. Ten minutes later, I'm being pulled into the managers office for a bollocking. Apparently, advising a customer to change settings on their PC is out of our remit, and we have a premium rate number to direct customers to call for that sort of stuff.

Then there was the time I got into trouble for reading. It was a sunday, with no customers calling in, so we had nothing to do. Even so, because of a couple of morons browsing the internet or reading papers while talking to customers, the rest of us had to suffer in silence. So, I read my book, only when the lines were dead, and still bollocked for it.

Prior to getting into software I worked in a "call center" of sorts, taking calls from heart patients wearing cardiac monitors and experiencing symptoms. I worked the overnight, so it was relatively quiet (allowing me to do homework, as noted above) and I was pretty much the highest-paid envelope-stuffer and postal meter worker around, as all the reports needed to go out first thing in the morning. I did talk to some interesting and occasionally famous people. Following my shift I would head to school.

My first job in software was as the SDK Tech Support person for the company. Where there weren't a ton of call for SDK support, I also had to do support for the actual product. I called a fairly prominent entrepreneur (who knew the CEO) an asshole when he yelled at me because he was a dumbass. While I worked there I learned as much as I could by trying to determine non-user error problems myself by looking at the code -- I actually had access to the repository -- and working with one of the developers to troubleshoot. Gaining this knowledge and experience allowed me to move to QA, and then up and up until I was a Sr. SW Engineer and Team Lead for the product.

I worked at a call centre part-time for three months. I recommend not putting call centre work on your CV to show technical employers, if you have any other technical work or qualifications, because you'll want to keep your CV tech focused.

However go for it, if you need it to live etc.
