How do you get the 'zen' right?

Posted 19 April 2013 - 10:51 PM

How do you get your life, mind, surroundings right for a big coding marathon? I usually get some Oreos,Dr Peppers and a big 'do not disturb' on my door.

Food doesn't help. I just read DIC and eat. Then the food coma kicks in...

I think there was an old thread about music to listen to while writing code to. I write my best code to Mozart, Yanni, Enigma, Dire Straits, Depeche Mode, and Lady Antebellum -- yeah, I know its weird, but not as weird as my friend who writes with Skinny Puppy blaring at 11 on his stereo.

Turning on my favorite music in the earphones to provide the background so that I can hear nothing but my thoughts.

Whenever I try and get too comfortable, I end up not doing much coding. I just drink a lot of coffee. Coffee gets me through. When I can't think straight anymore, I eat dinner, and then I get back on the coffee.

I visualize the sound of one hand clapping, and in so doing perceive the essence of the fly.

I find it almost impossible to code while listening to music, perhaps because I'm a musician. The one exception I've found is Bach's "The Art of Fugue."
