The Pinned Tutorials Are Already Too Advanced For Me?

Posted 20 April 2013 - 10:28 AM

I posted something about needing help with how to get started with game development and trying to grasp all of the fundamentals, and someone referred me to the pinned tutorials at the top of the topic. I've looked at them and they're already a little too advanced for me. I'd really just like to try to start close to very bottom of all of this, but am unsure how.

Then may I suggest you start with something simple like creating a simple Notepad clone, Calculator instead of a game?!?! You need to learn to walk before you run. In other words, if the tutorials are too advanced, then learn the basics and work your way up to it.

I have no idea what WinMain or callback is

Well, a good thing to do is, do some research on WinMain and callbacks.

I'm trying to learn the basics, but I simply don't even know where to start or how.

See game development as the next level to learning general programming. If the tutorials are really giving you problems I'd focus on programming other software for a bit, staying away from games.

I agree with . Pick a language and start learning it. Do the basic exercises with Strings, loops, and arrays. Once you have the basics down, attempt something simple like a guessing game or rock paper scissors.
