Help! I am lost! Game programming in C++

Posted 21 April 2013 - 11:13 AM

Hey guys!

I've studied programming (C#) for a bit over a year now and made some okay games in Unity and a bunch of regular projects.

I felt realyl familiar in C# and started with XNA some time ago.

I found i SOOOOO fun! and each time i made a little 2D/3D thing appear on the screen i felt like i was making the new AAA game :D

But i read that XNA was shut down and microsoft won't update it anymore... :(

So now i figures why not try my luck with C++ - that can't possibly be halted for a long time. :)

I know a bit of C++ so no big deal changing the language...
Now all i want to know is what libary should i use?
should i even use a libary? - read somewhere that i shoul just start with a text based game? and then work my way up?
Is it okay if i start with a simple 2D game since i have a bit of experiance in XNA? maybe even toy around with some 3D?

Please please help me :)

So i guess all i want to know is?
How the heck do i make games in C++?
And how do you guys do it? (a picture of the outcome of that product would be really nice, so i can see what it can do)

Thanks in advance!

ps. i hope i don't sound too foolish since this is a whole new topic for me :)

Ahh okay.
I've done a bit more research and i found the dark gdk to be somewhat familiar. :)
But after another research i found directX and i think i might be onto something here? :)

So do you think that directX is too much of a handfull, or is it actually okay to start up with? :)

Directx is a good way to go... how much of a handful for you? Who is to say, but if others can manage it why not you?

Not everyone copes with DirectX, have a look at the DirectX SDK samples and see what you think.

Aye, currently having some trouble setting up Directx. But it seems like the stuff you can do with it is quite nice :)

Can't wait to get my hands dirty x)

Thanks for you guys' opinion :)

Have you tried Open GL/SDL libraries. Lazyfoo can get you started with some tutorials

Glad you've found your answer. Yes, DirectX is quite an extensive sdk, I've only begun to scratch the surface, and I've been experimenting with it for over a year now.

Good Luck
