Most SEO friendly way for multi-language site

Posted 22 April 2013 - 08:55 AM

Hi folks!

I recently launched a website (developed in PHP) which at the time being is in English.
As most of my users are from other countries than UK/US I am thinking about translating the page
into others languages as well. Especially as no one from my target group searches for relevant terms in
English but in their own language. I favored the version to GET the language via the URL, like index.php?lang=dk
but I read that this is not preferable in terms of SEO. I favored this approach as it would not force me to have several files for the different languages.

What is your opinion? How do you solve this?

www.website.com/dk/
dk.website.com
website.com/index.php?lang=dk

What are the advantages and disadvanteges of the different solutions?

Thanks in advance!

I recently did a website multi-language with several files (3 languages). The development of that website worth it..because I will never make such a terrible mistake - having specific files for each language.

The best solution for me, and I will implement it on my next project, is to store in database.

ID | description | lang
1 hi en
2 Bonjour fr

Then you store the lang chosen by the user on a session..and you continue with your url website like: www.website.com

Thanks for your reply.
Well thatīs what I also thought about as it seems to be most efficient
in regards of numbers of files and maintenance but Google does not recommend it in terms of SEO.

So I know what Google recommends, but would like to hear best practice from users here on DIC.

Look at what others do.
Blogspot.com redirects to Blogspot.de or Blogspot.co.uk according to location.
You can also look at companies like Kaplan International who offer English language courses for every country you could imagine.

Some quick google-fu found this: http://www.searcheng...gual-seo/19903/

I would go with www.website.com/dk/ because it balances simplicity and clarity.

You should know about URL rewrites. Depending on your server, www.website.com/index.php?lang=dk can become www.website.com/dk/ without any more effort than some configuration options.

Thanks, the hint with the URL rewrites is very useful. Think I will go for index.php?lang=dk with a rewrite to .com/dk/ as you supposed.
Thanks!
