3D Printers

Posted 24 April 2013 - 06:43 AM

what do you all think of 3D Printers?

Gizmodo has its opinion: http://gizmodo.com/5995280/9-incredible-objects-that-prove-3d-printers-are-totally-worth-it

I for one, think it's awesome to know that at some point; I could literally email someone a spoon.

What do you all think?

I think that in some 8-10 years they will be as popular as regular printers nowadays. The idea of being able to print a physical object is really exciting, though I've already read that someone has tried to print a gun.

I have a regular printer under my desk. Haven't used it in about two years, and the last time I did, I was using the scanner part of it, not the printer.

The only person I know who uses his printer regularly is making circuit boards on it...

No they haven't. Many people are printing gun parts, such as magazines and stocks, but you're not likely to see anyone printing anything that has to contain an explosion.

Well, people are also printing robots, and those that are have to buy the parts for it, and I know that plastic is not the best material for a gun, but I'd imagine that it's possible.

You could probably print some pretty groovy keys for your keyboard...

Actually, this would be an interesting use for these devices. Little plastic parts that can get lost, like keyboard keys, and are a pain in the shebozzle to replace, but would be easy to print. You wouldn't want to print a whole keyboard, 'cause it would take forever and it would be expensive, but this way you wouldn't have to replace the keyboard if the "T" came off and got eaten by the dog.

I envision a day when people have 3D printers hooked up to cloud printing services, and the inevitable hacking and phallus printing that follows.
