Possible to watch a chat window for commands?

Posted 01 May 2013 - 06:57 AM

Hi, title pretty much says it all... lol.
I'm looking for a way to automate some chat functions and log. Is this possible in VB6? It's really the only language I'm comfortable with... but I've never had any of my programs interact with other programs...

Tough to explain, but no, not for spamming... lol. AN IRC bot would be the closest thing, only I don't actually want to input to the chat window. I want my computer to basically alarm me when specific things are said, so I don't miss them when I am gaming, for example, and log it in case I do anyways...

Then an IRC bot is the way to go.. plenty of tutorials floating around to do that..

Example:

There are a few in other languages also.

IRC bot would only work in IRC tho. I am using it in a game chat window... I'm not asking if there is a better way, just if it is possible in VB 6 and what commands I should be looking at to do it?

Ideally would want to find an api or some sort of back end hook to this chat window so you are not trying to scrape text.. because, let's face it, you are going to be occupying the computer's primary screen/active window with the game, right? It's a little hard for an app to even attempt to scrape text from some other app if it's not primary.

the game is a facebook game (sad I know) that I am a leader in and I'd be gaming on my xbox... lol. Both programs can easily run side-by-side

from first look, that could work... was really looking to play in VB a bit for oldtimes sake and do some stuff I've never done before in it than learn a new language/scripting software. The game chat log doesn't go far enough back, so I am looking to basically make my own.

First I would avoid VB6. I mean that language has been sent to pasture a long time ago. .NET is where it is now a days.

As for your app - you can go a few routes of trying to track down long burred win32 api calls, or look at ManagedSpy.

Either way - not a trivial task you can easily go traipsing down the primrose path to do.

Yeah, that's what they all say. But nothing in .Net is as compact as CBT hooking for this sort of thing, AFAIK. (FYI, CBT stands for "Computer-Based Training".)
