Computer Science Concentration?

Posted 01 May 2013 - 08:55 AM

Hey everyone, I'm new to these forums. I'm a Junior Computer Science major and I have 1 more year to go. I first started with the intent on game programming when I was a freshman. But shortly after I started I've come across so many things you can do with CS and I don't know what I what to do anymore. It's just so much to choose from and I feel like I'm all over the place and can't really build anything(program wise) because I don't know which direction I want to go in. There's game programming, robotics,AI, Network Security,Web Programming, Biometrics(I recently got an interest in) and many more concentrations under computer science.

Basically can you guys tell me what's your take on this? What's a good interesting concentration to focus on? What are your concentrations & a good way to get started with it?

Is This A Good Question/Topic? 0

Look, sport, what one person finds interesting another person doesn't. That's pretty much up to you. Are the explicitly named concentrations the only ones your school offers, or are there more?

As for how to start - doesn't your school sort of set you on a track for your concentration, or are you just making it up as you go with what ever classes you feel like?

To me, this question always sounds a little like someone asking "Hi everyone, I'm single and interested in having sex with someone. Who should I have sex with, and what should I do with them?"

Either you should pick a concentration that seems interesting and pursue the things that it requires, or you should look at particular aspects of programming and CS that interest you and find a concentration that seems to require those.

If you narrow down your question, maybe someone can help you out a little more - like, "I'm interested in X, here's what classes I'm thinking about starting with, is there anything I'm missing", or maybe "I'd like to pursue Y, but I'm weak at foo and bar, is this going to be a problem?" or something like that. Of course, if I have to teach you how to ask questions, then we're starting from a bad spot. Asking useful questions that can actually be answered is really a pretty basic aspect of learning anything.

This really sounds like something your adviser should be able to help you decide, as he or she knows you personally. Whereas in contrast, we're just a bunch of people on the internet.

I like to think of myself as more than just a person on the internet.
