What would you do if you weren't a Software Engineer?

Posted 12 May 2013 - 05:47 AM

Everyone gets to that point, at least I hope it's not just me, I'm thinking it's time to get out of the Software industry but I've got no clue what to go into next.

You could always try your hand at being a seaman. Sail the ocean blue, with your saucy ship's a beauty. Though I hear they want sober men and true, who are attentive to their duty.

>implying im a software engineer

I would like to be a chef, but I'm entirely too picky of an eater. However, my dream in life is to be a video game programmer.

I'd switch to Networking/IT. I am not planning to leave software industry any time soon, as the hours, pay, and benefits are just awesome.

Perhaps a Pharmacist or another health care-related field. I worked for one of the big world-renowned teaching hospitals in Boston prior to entering the software field.

I'd definitely, despite the lack of income, be working around my second hobby involving cars, and racing.

What do you enjoy? There are a lot of people who pursue something they've always enjoyed doing and lived happily ever after. But to just come in here and say I don't want to do what I'm doing anymore without at least giving us an idea of the types of things you enjoy makes it hard for us to give you any ideas.

Of course, if you just want someone to tell you there's a lot of money in a certain area, you're probably going to be asking this same question in a couple of years as money is not always a good single solution to a career without some interest in that field.

There does appear to be a group of people that are just happy being career students so there's always that.

Are you suggesting that I was implying a saucy, randy, suggestively off-color tale of ribaldry!?

I'd be a starving artist working in kitchens or some shitty IT support desk (both have their perks over the other) while trying to make it with my band

I'd be in jail by now.

I'd have taken up a job working with animals, probably animal rescue, then beaten someone half to death because of the way their animals had been treated. Either that, or I'd live alone in a tiny flat surrounded by an army of cats by now.
