What's the proper way to uninstall a Python package?

Posted 17 May 2013 - 05:38 AM

I want to use a newer version of the Python package xlrd. But I can't seem to uninstall it why is this?

linux$ pip freeze | grep xlrd

Warning: cannot find svn location for distribute==0.6.28dev-r0
xlrd==0.6.1

linux$ pip uninstall xlrd

Uninstalling xlrd:
Proceed (y/n)? y
  Successfully uninstalled xlrd

linux$ sudo pip uninstall xlrd
[sudo] password for linux:

Uninstalling xlrd:
Proceed (y/n)? y
  Successfully uninstalled xlrd

When I then test a Python script which imports xlrd then the script is still working like xlrd was never uninstalled. What am I doing wrong?

linux$ pip freeze | grep xlrd

Warning: cannot find svn location for distribute==0.6.28dev-r0
xlrd==0.6.1

Apt-get purge doesn't seem to work either.
linux$ sudo apt-get purge xlrd

Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
E: Unable to locate package xlrd
