Node.js vs HTML/CSS For Website Development

Posted 23 May 2013 - 12:30 PM

Hey all,

Rather new to website development and I was wondering what the recommended language(s) are/is.

I discovered Node.js through a few friends and they say its really cool to program in. Its rather confusing for me at the moment as I am pretty new to the whole thing.

On the other hand, you have the standard HTML/CSS route.

Just as a question to you all, which language would you all recommend users to program in for the future?

Thanks all!

PS: Poll up on top!

If you are not hip on your HTML/CSS then you will have a problem. Get the foundations right.. then branch off to the javascript/ajax/php/etc nodes.

even when you use Node.js, you need to know HTML/CSS, because that’s the only language, a browser uses for display.

on a side note, Node.js does not even create HTML/CSS, it usually forwards that task to a suitable templating engine (Jade, AngularJS, Twig, to name only some) or loads ready HTML files.

The advantage of Node.js is, that you can develop the frontend and the backend in the same language (Javascript).

So it seems like I don't even know what Node.js is used for!

Can someone shine some light onto how to use Node.js in tandem with HTML/CSS?

you usually delegate the HTML part. either to the file system or a templating engine. (just google node.js tutorial)
