Distributing Application w/ Database

Posted 23 May 2013 - 05:18 PM

Hey DIC members, so developing applications in your dev environment that must connect to a database is quite easy. What if you're ready to distribute it to complete computer novices? Can't expect them to download and install SQL Server 200x and configure it. What would be the most suitable way to handle this?

IF you don't want them installing a DB like MSSQL Express then I guess you can use the database file route. Right click on the project -> add new -> data -> local database.

I also encourage you to go down the local database route. But if you absolutely need SQL Server, remember that in your setup program you can pass command line parameters to SQL Server's setup.exe to get it to install quietly. See http://msdn.microsof...y/ms144259.aspx . Also see the related topic about how to install using a configuration file.

There is also SQLite.NET. See http://brennydoogles...te-with-csharp/

I'd also encourage SQL CE. It's gotten a lot better than it used to be, and with EF Code First, you can basically create and use local DBs seamlessly.

Been using SQL CE and just started on the Entity Framework. Quite easy actually and it uses LINQ so that's a plus.
