First game you remember?

Posted 25 May 2013 - 07:18 AM

So what is the first game you can remember playing pretty much by yourself? What platform was it on? Maybe even say how old you think or know you were? Also maybe go into if it influenced you as a programmer? Thought this might be interesting to see what everyones answers are and compare.

I think the first game I played by myself was Super Solvers Treasure Mountain or Outnumbered for PC.(I thought it was the same game) There were other games I played but I needed help with them. I think I was around 5 or 6 at the time. I'm not a programmer yet, but it influenced me anyways I think seeing as most stuff I like is similar or I'm looking for things similar. Not just in gaming but the sound and the way it looks and what you do in the game too. Ah and even the movement.

Is This A Good Question/Topic? 0

Super Mario World at age 3. My sister was teaching me how to play. It's actually one of my first cognitive memories, and I liked how I could control the little guy on the TV and move around in this weird world. There's even a video of it buried deep within our home videos somewhere, I've seen it a couple times before. Closest thing to being born with a controller in hand.

My first RPG was Tecmo: Secret of the Stars at age 6.

My first PC game was Tomb raider 3, and my first game ever was Super Mario World at 7 years old.

Pitfall on the Atari

I was still in diapers

It didn't necessarily influence me as a programmer as I didn't become one until 20 years later

Sonic the Hedgehog and my Sega Genesis in general got me into wanting to make video games though. I used to tear apart my game console and TV and screw with it all the time. I learned quite a bit and became the kid who fixed everyone's game console and TVs in the neighbourhood. My own TV which I played my games on were always TVs I found in the dumpster that I'd repair and get working... it's the only way I could have a TV as my mother would never have got me a TV (we couldn't afford it anyways).

I used to also try to dissect my games in game. Especially if the game had a debug mode. I'd cycle through animations and screw with codes on the game genie, trying to reverse engineer (to the best of my ability considering the limited resources I had, and the fact we didn't have a family computer). I figured out what sprite sheets worked before I even knew what a sprite sheet was.

Battlezone
It was 3D.. because you had to embed your head in it :online2long:

Actually, before this was Pong and then Pacman, but Battlezone really impressed.

Added: Oh, and Defender.

Many a day was used walking around the neighborhood looking for pop bottles to take to the store for deposit or yards to mow, Or sidewalks to shovel (in the winter). Then all that work went right into a Space Invader's game at the local Pizza Hut. I was around 11.

Depends where you are and what you're shoveling. I was in Palo Alto when I was in middle school, and already you could make a fortune clearing the bullshit off the streets, any time of year.

These days, I understand it's done with bulldozers.

I was out of a job selling vacuum cleaners. We had to memorize a couple pages, no big deal. One of the better sellers went out on his own to sell a table sized console that played PONG. After being tired of vacuum cleaners and then finding an ad in the newspaper about this new venture I applied to see if I was suited to sell these 'coffee table' sized game machines.

The Osborn 'portable' was during that era as well as Apple I, TI 99-4A and the Commodore. When (help me here) Dan Brickland and ??? came out with the Visicalc the world of computers were given a shot in the arm. While at the university I unfortunately never had the opportunity to play text versions of 'asteroids'. I still have my 8 inch floppy disk. Too bad I was a nice guy and didn't pirate them at the time. They were clever, those guys. The file name was obfuscated to keep from the prying eyes of the professors.

Bottom line: the first game I played was on TI 99-4A, WUMPUS, which I have later written maybe 3 or 4 times *because* it is still a fun game after all this time.

Space Invaders, of course. boom, boom, Boom, Boom, BOOM, BOOM... you could feel it in your bones.

I do recall being over a friend's house trying to write our own Donkey Kong on his Atari 800. We didn't get very far, but we had high hopes.
