Creating a small file-hosting server

Posted 26 May 2013 - 11:21 AM

I have read many places that you can create a file hosting server for free, but it be only LAN. I wanted to create a small server, using my computer, that i can use as a database(per-say) to store my cousins photos. I was hoping to make something to which she can access from her house (in NM), and have full access to all the photos stored in my computer(in TX). Is this possible? I would also like to use the cheapest solution, since it will only be her using it. Any ideas?

Is This A Good Question/Topic? 0

Set up a file server like you would for local use, then use Hamachi

I use it to access my files at home from my university all the time. It's pretty simple to set up.

So she would be able to use this, even if she is 1000+ miles away?

Why not just use something like Dropbox or Flickr?

As long as there's an internet connection, yes. I currently live in Chicago, but my server is hosted with my family in Florida. The system works perfectly fine for me. :) I just use hamachi to tunnel and then an FTP client like filezilla to get files off the server.

Ok, but with me setting up the server, what will be the cost to make it connectable from far away? What I mean is, will I have to pay for a domain? I will be creating my own file transfer system(to put passwords and customize the layout).

Sounds like someone wants to just setup a private VPN between a few pcs.

Ok. Is there anyways I can limit those who access the vpn, to only be able to looking a certain directory? For example, if I only want pictures to be accessed through the vpn, can I limit it to the "Pictures" directory?

Sure.. it is like any other server if the machine was directly connected to your network. Certain folders are shared, some are not, etc. Basic network admin sort of stuff.

You can make a free server that is ip based. You can also use a free domain service such as subdomain.com using no-ip.

Self-Hosted, dynamically updated, free.

In the end it will depend on how much disposable cash you can spare. I've created Remote Access as well as Site to Site VPN servers for my company, and in order for it to work steadily you'd have to get at least a decent VPN router box or a PC with Windows Server (as I've been working with mostly MS stuffs) that's able to service the Remote Clients and put your files on the same box as shown www.youtube.com/watch?v=QKdE5p0MVl0. From there it's just a matter of NTFS and file sharing permission to control the Access Rights for each users. But if you are just looking to set up a simple file sharing server, I'd consider ryanisis' suggestion.
