Can't get .ssml file to work

Posted 29 May 2013 - 08:41 AM

I'm trying to figure out how to get an SSML file to render text to speech in a browser. It's an XML-based technology and I know it uses the .ssml extension, but when I go to open it in a browser like Firefox it only shows the document tree and says that I need to style it.

I'm not sure if I would use an external XSL style-sheet for that, and if I AM supposed to, how do you direct it to style the .ssml file?

This is the code I have (saved with the .ssml extension). I'm basically just trying to get a simple "hello world" example to be able to play on top of a website I have already designed.

<?xml version="1.0"?>
<speak xmlns="http://www.w3.org/2001/10/synthesis"
       xmlns:dc="http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/"
       version="1.0"
       xml:lang="en-US">

  <p>
    <s>
      <voice>
      	<emphasis>Congratulations</emphasis>
      </voice>
    </s>
    <s>
      <voice>
      	You successfully got the text to speech to work.
      </voice>
    </s>
  </p>

</speak>

Any direction on this issue would be much appreciated.

I don't know about XSL, but I'd imagine that, if you just want to style the appearance of the XML in a browser, a CSS style-sheet would do. You cold include that by adding an include to the style-sheet at the top of the XML:
<?xml version="1.0"?>
<?xml-stylesheet href="file.css"?>

What effect this might have on the SSML stuff, I don' tknow.

I only checked the SSML specs, but it seems you need a browser that is capable of speech synthesis (aka voice browser). I doubt Firefox (or any other I know) is capable of that.

Thanks. I'll give that a try. I never really considered that being the problem.
