What do you do to pass the time while plugging away at code?

Posted 31 May 2013 - 08:35 AM

For those of you who are hard core coders (and even the not so hard core coders), what do you do to keep your day flowing? Do you listen to music, podcasts, netflix? Or are you a clock watcher? What helps you get through your day?

Me? I like to listen to Podcasts, and sometimes Pandora for some motivational music; depending on my mood or coding pace, it could be anything from Metal, Goth/Punk/Industrial, to classical or even new age (I have quite the eclectic taste in music).

If I'm listening to Podcasts, I like the following: Podblocked, BLodCast, The Ultimate Facepalm, The Boxed Whine, The Nerdist, and Jay and Silent Bob Get Old (along with a lot of the other Smodcast shows).

So, how about it? What's your way of getting through the day?

i do a lot of bullshit to pass time when i don't feel like coding. but when i'm coding, coding helps pass the time pretty well.

Audio Books, FTW!

I do some of those as well! If you're into zombie stories, there's an ongoing zombie podcast(called, "We're Alive" an audio drama) story over at zombiepodcast.com there's about 30 + episodes up now, and their going to start their next season again in August.

Awesome show. Don't know if you're into that kinda thing, but if you are, check it out.

Also, there's other places like podiobooks.com where some authors have their stories out there for free (you just need to listen to some ads at the beginning and end of each chapter or two.)

More good stuff to pass the time.

Music.

Everything else is too much of a distraction and I become unproductive.

I have a desk fan on. Keeps me very focused for some reason. But honestly if i'm just hacking away at it time really flies. But then again i'm not a hard core coder who has programs with 1000s of lines.

@SqlShark What kind of music?

@Ticon ?? My A.D.D. would kick in and I'd get so fired. You're one of those lucky people that can focus like that. ENVY - I HAS IT

In my current job, I listen to a lot of alternative/live music while I code. Austin has a great set of radio stations that feature new artists, and a lot of them are really good. Other than that, I use Pandora and alternate between like 4 stations: Soundtracks, Escala, Bond, and Passion Pit.

All my coding is in LabView these days (I do LabView PNP Drivers for scientific instruments - working for National Instruments), and it is highly productive, and it may take very little time to actually code. Most of my time is spent designing my APIs and getting to know the instrument.

HA! Nice! Glad I'm not alone in that.

I mostly listen to Salsa, Reggae, or anything else that I can really get into a deep vibe with.

^This.

I listen to music at work, because there are too many distractions. Co-workers are still able to get my attention w/o much effort. At home, it's quiet though, so I can usually code w/o music.

There's a school of thought that says A.D.D. is a combination of lack of sleep and poor nutrition. Try getting more sleep and avoid processed foods (mostly things that come in packaging) for a while.

When I'm dealing with coding issues I find D.I.C. to be a good temporary distraction because it's still close to the topic, especially if there's a good question posted.
