I don't even listen to standard radio anymore. It's gotten so mundane. Pandora and podcasts (sometimes netflix). :)

WTF is with podcasts and videos? If there is anything guaranteed to make me write crap code (or no code which is a slight improvement) it is stuff that takes my attention away. Music is often too much for me too.

Conditions that help me code -- or do any other knowledge work -- are no distractions, a bottle of water, a snappy computer a big monitor or two and a tidy desk.

I certainly don't need some social networking, face-time, skype, multitasking, video tutoracle, DIC, music email notification, SMS, systray-baloon, office paperclip (remember that?).

I can relate to the fan. I'm sad my office fan is broken.

Don't get too close while he's working; cfoley has been known to bludgeon whippersnappers with his cane...

EDIT: Grammar

I tend to listen to music with no or redundant lyrics, or have a TV show running from netflix or amazon. Right now it's Jericho.

I have videos playing in the background I listen to the audio of. And of course, I post here sometimes.

Noise Cancelling headphones, and either Classical music or straight Rave types. When I'm coding I want nothing as a distraction or to stand a chance of a distraction.

I've always found that this leads to a net decrease in code, even if output and productivity are improved...
