I wonder if it's just me, but I can't listen to words of any kind while I'm coding. Music, podcasts, other people talking. It distracts me and drives me nuts.

Instrumental heavy metal. Very loud instrumental heavy metal. Pumping through headphones so I can't hear any other words and I can think entirely in code. That helps me work.

Probably just me.

I'm mostly with you on that. I love instrumental metal - along with other instrumental music. But as for podcasts? For me, it's background noise and it filters out other office noises.

But, a cool choice!

I can listen to music but it needs to be really quiet otherwise it gets distracting. I'll take small breaks throughout the day where I'll play a few hands of Spanish 21, do an online crossword, stuff like that just to give my brain a break.

I work from home so the real challenge is staying focused and on track...there's lots of potential distractions here.

I totally understand that! I get to work from home once a month because of my schedule. If I have things around the house to do - I get COMPLETELY distracted!

Good Post!

Nope, not just you. I'm the same way. I'm always blocking out that stuff with instrumental only music so I can focus. Even people moving around the house doing things that make noise, if it's not a very routine normal thing to hear, it's distracting, because it's a bunch of random and unpredictable sounds that my brain has to bother processing I guess..

I love to code listening to music mostly, but I'm a drummer and so that leads to tapping, especially when listening to more rhythmically articulate songs. This tends to anger the coworkers seated around me. So, I can't really listening to songs that groove like Wax Simulacra by the Mars Volta.

If it's something I really enjoy doing then I will never need music to drown things out. You would have to take a baseball bat to my head to get me out of that trance, because nothing short of finishing will snap me out of it.

Don't get me wrong, I don't need the music to function as a programmer, I need the lack of random background noise.

Silence would be perfect. Put me in an isolation chamber with a waterproof laptop! :D

AIN'T THAT the TRUTH!
I'll listen to anything that drowns out the background noise.

Nope, I'm a metal head too. Melodic power metal. Don't mind if there's words, but also I don't mind if there isn't words.
