Question about programming 2d games

Posted 16 June 2013 - 04:27 AM

Hi, I would like to create a 2d game and I wonder what game
engine will be the best for my needs. Now I know this question
was asked many times before but I just want to be sure that I
will pick the right engine so I won't waste my time. I want
to make a 2d game like Prince of Persia where the camera does
not follow the main character (unlike Super Mario where the
camera allways follows the character), and when the main
character reaches to the end of the screen, a new screen
replaces the old screen immediately. This camera issue is crucial
for me (otherwise I would not have post this question). I heard
that Unity and SDL libraries in C are good choice for 2d game
development, I just want to be sure that they have the feature I
described earlier. Please note that I only have a solid background
in C and C++ and I don't have any experience in game development, so
please no hostile comments. Thanks in advance.

The camera is something you build in the game. Heck you can use opengl and do the same! Either you mentioned would be fine, or check the pinned threads because yes this has been asked a whole mess of times.

Personally, if you have no game development experience, I found this tutorial great for teaching the basics http://www.gamefroms...PP-Edition.aspx

(I am assuming you know c/c++. If not, there are ports of sfml into other languages http://www.sfml-dev....d/bindings.php)
