Congratulation on writing a book, I hope it's got plenty of pictures.

Why no book review on here?

Congratulations! I went and bought a copy on Kindle (I've been buying almost all my computer books on Kindle lately as it allows me to take my library with me on my phone, tablet, and main computer at home where I'm actually doing the programming, and read when the oppurtunity presents itself). Incidentally, the description was not showing up for me on the paperback version.

I've kind of been trying to figure out whether to do OpenGL or DirectX and have decided I should probably do both. So, I think SDL might help me on the OpenGl path. This will make a good oppurtunity for me to try out SDL! Thanks for the book! We need more game programming authors out there!

Re: Stayscrisp Has Published an SDL Book

I had a really rough time compiling the Hello World example. It may be because I'm in a VS2012 Windows 7 64 bit environment, rather than the environment recommended in the book. But it took me about 2 hours to figure out how to compile it.

Some of the issues that I ran into were:

Project-->Properties-->Configuration Properties-->General-->Platform Toolset

Had to be changed to v100 from v110.

Had to play around with the library and include directories in configuration a bit.

Project-->Properties-->Configuration Properties-->c\C++-->Code Generation-->Runtime Library

Had to go through and make sure that everything was using the same /MD value in all projects. I think you may have to compile two separate sets of .DLL files for /MD and /MDd, but I just compiled the release version for /MD (along with all the other projects) and finally got it to work.

Anyway, thought I would give you a heads up that there may be some issues here aren't covered in the book when compiling with VS2012. (I would have used VS2010 but my DirectX is completely hosed up in VS2010, which is why I went to VS2012 rather than trying to uninstall and reinstall an older version of DX).

Well, have to get back to the book now! :-)

BBeck, at least you where able to solve this problem on your own. I know stayscrisp has got a few people saying they can't get it to compile, due to the face that they can't read properly. Their main errors have to do with not including sdl.h.

This isn't a beginner's guide to C++, so a good knowledge of C++ and object oriented programming is a must.

Obviously these people are new to C++ as well, and have no idea how to setup projects correctly.

BBeck, +1 for you for working a solution in for VS2012

stayscrisp, Keep up the good work :)
