What languages are web services implemented in?

Posted 27 June 2013 - 09:01 PM

I'm asking because I'm interested in offering technical writing services to web service developers, and I need to know where it makes sense to look for clients.

I can think of three likely languages for this task: Java (which I speak), PHP (which I also speak) and C# (which I don't).

But all of the web services I've encountered to date were written in Java.

How representative is this? Does it make sense to concentrate exclusively on the Java world? Or should I spread a broader net than that?

Is This A Good Question/Topic? 0

I can't speak too much of representation among all web services just because there are so many out there.

Google tends to favor Java for theirs.
Facebook and twitter are PHP (I believe).
My work uses mainly PHP services, though they also have 1 or 2 Java services.
I have also noticed that as .NET catches on it is becoming more common to see services in it (though I can't point at any specific examples here).
I have also seen web services written in Ruby On Rails, Perl, and Python, though Perl and Python are fairly rare (in my experience).

I believe that you should be fine if you stick to Java and PHP, at least for the moment. Others may have more to add.

Short answer: Web Services are implemented in whatever your want.

There are no general purpose languages that don't have some kind of web service framework at this point.

Twitter is Scala ( http://blog.redfin.c...uses_scala.html ). They famously found Ruby on Rails didn't work for them.

Java is probably still king of the middle tier. And the myriad of other languages that can run on a JVM.

PHP is simply ubiquitous. Everyone loves to hate it, but it's there.

.NET technologies probably get more of a workout inside a company than on the internet.

The choice shouldn't be a function of popularity, but suitability.
