Backing up Virtual Boxes prior to host operating system reinstall.

Posted 29 June 2013 - 02:37 PM

I'm about to reinstall my operating system but before I do I would like to save the contents of my virtual boxes. What is the recommended way of safely retain these virtual installations? Can I copy the Virtual Box VMS directory to a "safe" place then just copy it back to the new system?

By the way the host system is Linux, so a Linux solution is required.
