Though not pertinent, for the curious, I provided this:
Today, I was told we'd be hiring for that position. Huh? We don't need any app developers... We are fighting fires, working on an application migration, fulfilling custom work requests, and generally have more than enough work. But, we haven't started a new in house project for some time. It it weren't for the fact that most programmers are tech savvy enough to solve most enterprise problems not directly related producing code, we'd probably have to let some go.
Turns out, what they really want is a capable geek. We recently lost a project manager, not a programmer at all, who was a capable geek. He knew enough SQL and OS stuff to diagnose most problems with our systems. Would sometimes write scripts to fix problems or just manually resolve issues. We need that kind of guy.
How the hell do you advertize for that? Opening for accomplished Enterprise script kiddie? The powers that be feel that is a programmer position. It's not, of course. But I don't know what it is.
