Audiophiles swear in the name of foobar. There are a lot of plugins and even if you do not care for plugins it is reasonably easy to setup and go.

On PC, I used foobar before but I wanted to add ratings on my tracks. I tried to look for a plugin but there are so many, so I just looked for another alternative. Found MusicBee. I liked it.

On Android I have tried a lot of music players:

- They say PowerAmp is the best but for some reason some songs stutter on my phone, even after playing with the settings.
- I used TTPod before for a long time but then I discovered more and more albums that scream for gapless playback. Not to mention the recent updates are really crazy: they are asking for your location and stuff that a music player doesn't really need. Then again, I think it has integration with a Chinese social site. There are quite a lot of skins you can download for this app within it.
- I used DeadBeef side by side with TTPod. It can handle gapless playback and is really simple. The reason I'm still using TTPod with this one is because it doesn't build your playlist. You have to manually search for songs and folders. Not really good if you want to move lots of stuff around. Also, I might add this app displays the most of a file's tag.
- I am now using GoneMad music player. It builds the playlists automatically, has gapless playback, and is easy to use. The only complaint is it really looks crude, but hey, you use the app to listen to music anyway.

PS: All these Android apps do not rely on the phone's media storage. It scans for the files on your memory card, which is a big plus and the way music players should be.

Zune!

Honestly I just use it because I own a Zune. Once that thing bites the dust, I'll move to something different.

when i first got spotify i loved the catalog and that it was available on my phone and computer and synced my playlists, it was really nice.

but what has become absolutely invaluable is how it connects me to my friends. i get new albums sent to me from friends almost every day. it solved the curated music problem by letting people whose taste i already agree with do the heavy lifting, instead of trying to do it with some algorithm.

(though, to be fair, the new discover page has some pretty good algorithms going)

As far as recommendations go, Google All Access was the most spot on for me. I'd happily use it if they had an iOS app and last.fm scrobbling support. They're reportedly getting the former soon, but the scrobbling doesn't seem to be something they're interested in and it is pretty important to me.

Also, maybe someone already has something so I don't have to write it (or maybe I'll have to write this). I need something that will go through my drives and rearrange the mp3s into a single structured music folder, and remove (or relocate for manual removal) duplicates. I've got like 2-3 copies of everything everywhere.

MPD. Or, lately, squeezebox-server with squeezelite. Loads of clients for android (and probably for other mobile OS but I don't care) and desktop. Everyone in my office can share the library and queue.

Windows Media Player and VLC

I've got a little problem with VLC, midi's doesn't sound very good.
I've copied the Windows XP soundfont (gm2.sf2), and I tried other soundfonts, but it doesn't matter,it sounds like a 144p YouTube-movie, somebody knows how to fix this?

I use Foobar, I like it's simple interface and no bullshit approach. Winamp is functional but it's a dog a program, so heavy, too many features, and it crashes not infrequently. iTunes is awful but I use it for my iPod (and that's all).

VLC I use for video, but I play so much music that I need a bit more out of a player than what VLC offers, in terms of library management.

I noticed this a week ago, not sure how long it's been in place... but Spotify wins brownie points for having a browser option. It's a bit slower than the application, but I think it's worth it. :bananaman:
