How much do you know?

Posted 17 July 2013 - 04:01 PM

I am just curious how much knowledge everyone has of IT--outside of programming. Such as I am very good with hardware. I can troubleshoot diagnose most motherboard, power supply, graphics, memory, etc problems. I am good with desktop administration, windows registry, installs, images, removing viruses, overclocking, networking, wireless networks, ethernet networks, DOS.. I'v played with Linux a little.. I am fluent in every version of windows since DOS...

I feel like I'v got a very broad knowledge base in IT. Anybody else?

Is This A Good Question/Topic? 0

I know everything...in the small subset of everything I know.

Anyways, point is, you should know a lot of things for IT. As is the case now, any technology job to the person that doesn't understand technology is equivalent. Web Developers are database admins, Programmers are Graphic Designers, Graphic Designers make videos and web designers build PCs.

I know nothing but use it all just the same.

This question is like asking "if you are a good driver and why..." all retrospective

This made me laugh, I used to work for Apple Support, and I got asked where the any-key was multiple times *facepalm

I have degrees in programming, network administration, and computer repair. Am I any good at any of it? Nope. I suck on all fronts... but they keep paying me anyway.

Are you just try to be humble or humorous, or are you really serious?

I've ran a business for 10 years now, that primarily fixes computers & laptops. I have experience with fixing the following :

iOS devices (iPads, iPods, iPhones)
laptops (anything from lcd replacements to board level repairs such as dc jacks or molex sockets, reflowing thermal compound)
pc components from hard drives or i/o cards, to board level work such as capacitors or usb ports
software repair, such as Windows bsod's, virus removal on both Windows & Linux Servers
Web Hosting on Linux & FreeBSD
Networking, running ethernet, tcp/ip stuff, firewalls, port forwarding, NAT/Avoiding Double NAT
USB board repair/data recovery
Nintendo DS repair (NDSL, DSi, DSi XL, 3DS, 3DSXL)
& I've had experience doing Xbox 360 & PS3 repairs... never again will I touch those damn things.
I've also had experience with Active Directory administration, but it's been years since I have had to touch that stuff.

Currently I have one employee & myself, at most I had 3 employees on the payroll.

To put it simply : programming is not my primary source of IT experience.

I did 7 years of Tier 1 Tech Support. Over the last 5 years of that my customer reviews were cumulatively over 95% positive

If the issue is Software, I CAN fix it.

If it's hardware, I can figure out what to replace but that's the best I can offer.

Now I get paid to pretty up an Access Database. That's actually been an awesome learning experience.

I know a little about a lot. I'm most comfortable with modding computers and consoles.
