Best empasis for telecommuting

Posted 17 July 2013 - 07:00 PM

Hi all.

I'm beginning a graduate program in Computer Science this fall.

In your opinion, what is the best emphasis/area to study in order to have the best chance of telecommuting or working from home at least 50% (preferably 100%) of the time?

It is very important to me to work from home in my career. Please, any advice is appreciated.

Hey.

I don't really think any one area of study will constantly have a better chance than any other. It mostly depends on the employer, and what you are able to negotiate with them. Most large companies will no doubt insist on you being in a cubicle from X-Y every day, regardless of what they do, while smaller companies may be more flexible. Personally I've been doing freelance web programming for most of my processional career, and I always had the option of working from home. That's not an uncommon situation for web developers.

Your best bet for getting what you want in the workplace is to be so good that they want to keep you happy. The best way to achieve that is to do something that you really love doing, and will learn fiercely and wildly. So pick the thing you most want to do and do that.

Although I will say that network guys typically have to be near their machines so they can go bang on them when they turn out to be Windows boxes, and crash.

Curious question - how is this important to your career? It is an option for the business you get hired by. Typically tenure, trust, etc.

Start your own company from the safety and security of your own home if it's really that important to you to telecommute for your career, otherwise you're at the mercy of whatever your future employer/employers want you to do.
