UK to create firewall focused at sites deemed inappropriate

Posted 28 July 2013 - 12:30 PM

You guys should have heard this.. UK is putting up a firewall that blocks ALL porn. Under the guise of protecting the children, you will soon be forced to opt-in in order to visit these sites.

Now it is coming to light that not only porn sites would be blocked, but other sites including "violent material", "extremist related websites", "suicide related websites", alcohol/tobacco/drugs, and even web forums.

Some reading material:

I want to hear your opinions on this.

If this actually happens Cameron won't be re-elected in the next General Election. He's praying on the ignorance of the General population who will instantly claim anyone who opposes the block is a kiddie fiddler. The funny thing is the Foreign Secretary William Hague said this http://www.guardian....censor-internet

And someone decided to create this:
http://sicksad.com/b...rry-government/

Cameron wants to use a chinese company to route traffic through at which point it will be checked. Even if you opt-out of the block your internet traffic will still be routed through this company.

All I see is 4 kiddie diddlers posting hate speech on a web forum.

I'm calling the censor police on you all.

there are contingencies in place, so what's it matter...?

eh, I mean, the primary web is useful but it's already like a dog that's been beaten within an inch of its life.

Personally, I'm looking forward to the calls to my ISP claiming they have blocked my favourite porn sites.

Also, with an address like expertsexchange.com, do you think that Expert's Exchange will be blocked?

Probably. IIRC they've had to deal with that in the past.

Lol I noticed when I was uploading something to imgur the other day that it got filtered because I had named the picture something like "lolidiots.png" - can you spot the filtered string?

I bet it's the 'png' part, porn sites use the 'png' extension for their images. It's a syllabic abbreviation for PorNoGraphy.

I used to work for a pornsite, I know these things.

Is the conservative party in power in England these days? This reeks of conservative over-reaction.

What about larger sites, like YouTube? It doesn't take much to find violence on there. Surveillance footage, street fights, bum fights...

YouTube will take care of that stuff on their own, with their latest (horrible) ToS modifications.

For more lenient sites like liveleak, probably just the whole site will be filtered...

Are they are trying to impersonate China to much?
Maybe not to the same extent, but hey you gotta start somewhere.

They have to a legal definition and interpretation of "inappropriate" first.

Most of them are from privilege families with cart loads of money.
Nannies, Butlers and Man Servants.
Elitist Collages (Oxford Cambridge etc)

Still waiting for the politician to but his money where his mouth says on the line and live of 65 pounds a week and no handouts.
Or very London Centric in their thinking. Not all places have a transportation system like London's.

Don't think (and I hope) they don't get re-elected.
