Oh man... those omelets... I used to get on that site when I was 11 just to play three games that I kind of liked whenever I had some time to kill. So I'd do that and grab an omelet to keep my pet from starving. I didn't want to bother going and finding other food for it. I never got into it all that much, but my brother was obsessed with it for while.

Going back on topic though - There was one small forum I used to go to, and a lot of people there took a shot at making their own forums. I did as well, found the CSS section of the control panel, and started playing around trying to make custom skins for the invisionfree boards. It was fun for a bit, I helped a few people with their boards, but after a while I got bored with it. The code part was fun, but designing layouts like that really isn't my thing. So I started reading up on different coding languages, and eventually started trying to learn C++.

When I started gaming online with my PC (age 12?) there were clans that had websites. I wanted to learn how to make a website. Started with html/css/photoshop/flash, later getting into javascript, PHP/mySQL. Somewhere in there I spent some time learning a bit of C++. Currently looking at C++/Java as I'm starting my computer science degree. So far I prefer C++, but I'm in no position to argue about why one is better than the other.

Way back in my college. At first, I'm just an average student who knows how to program. I've tried joining the programming tournament

On first year: I lost, because of the data type! int should be double
2nd year: With the eye of the tiger as the music background, I became the champion.
3rd year: I've defended my title. I'm still the champion.
4th year: I'm now the event handler of programming tournament.

So before I've graduated, I've decided and make Programming my career. That's why, I'm here! Sing Avah Maria first while entering the door because programmers are easy to be scared.

What made me want to get into programming was RoboCop then games. I originally wanted to be a veterinarian.

Being a programmer is very much like being a veterinarian:

  • You approach something which seems harmless and (user) friendly, but turn your back and it bites you in the bottom
  • If you inspect something too closely you might uncover something you didn't want to see
  • Sometimes the best option is just to put it out of its misery :sweatdrop:

For me, there was quite a long series of events that led me here, so I'll try to nutshell it as much as possible.

Around age 11 I started with Visual Basic 3 when a friend showed me you could make joke programs with it. I ended up trying to learn bits and pieces about how to make it do more and more, and started learning the syntax of the language (at the time, I didn't know it was programming, I just thought it was fun). Not long after, I started looking through the data files for some simple games I played and reverse engineering them.

A couple of years later, I was on the Neopets site and saw you could make a page for your pets. That taught me HTML, and I learned CSS shortly after through the old phpBB forum software. That was cool, but I needed more, so I saw the code for the forum software was PHP, and picked that up and started tinkering with it. I ended up writing a few mods for it and have since picked up a ton more languages.

I'm still moving forward with it, too, and it's now spilled over into system administration and other fun tech stuff. My goal at this point is to get as close as I can to knowing how to do as much on or with computer systems and networks as possible.

I'd be lying, though, if I said working with tech all these years hadn't made me a little deranged.
