R4 Cards

Posted 06 August 2013 - 05:28 AM

I'm after picking up an R4 card for my 3ds but not sure where is the best place to order one. Some of the sites look a bit dodgy, so i'm unsure which one's are trustworthy.

R4 cards are devices that enable you to use a micro SD card in a Nintendo DS. They are not quite illegal, but are very dubious. I bought a DS on ebay a few years ago, advertised as coming with 10 games. When it arrived, it had an R4 card with around 80 DS games saved onto it. The box also contained a letter saying 'Please don't tell ebay about the R4 card'.

That's pretty cool. Now I want one - not for other games but sounds like I could load other stuff on the DS with it?

Yep. A few years before then I wouldn't have done, but hanging around with the reprobates on this site has given me a new appreciation for the work that programmers do. As a result, I don't agree with using an R4 card (or any means really) to put cracked games onto a DS. Simple.

You could certainly load other things onto the SD card, but who knows if the DS would be able to access/run whatever it is you've put on there.

What a coincidence. Ran into a neighbor lady from down the street at the kids' bus stop this morning who asked if I knew how to put games onto something that goes into a 3DS. I told her I had no clue and, in fact, until reading this I didn't know they were called R4 cards. She described it as the memory chip/sticks things that go into cell phones go into this other gizmo that plugs into a 3DS. This must be what she meant.

Told her the mighty Google would prolly be her best bet.

Since I got my DS, I've ran into R4 cards repeatedly around my local town. Had never ehard of them until the guy in Hong Kong saent one to me with my DS. So, yeah, I could probably help people having problems with them, but I disagree with their most common use.

Years ago I bought one of these cards, never did get around to using it. My reason for getting it was flashing homebrew ds games to it, like I did before with the GBA.

That's what I want to try. I might use my DS if I could do stuff like that.

Maybe so...but what she's wanting to do is illegal, she knows it and we tend to not condone those types of conversations around here.

When people ask me how to do something more toward the shady side of the spectrum (not that it happens all that often) I don't tell them to come check here.

We's gots standards to uphold an' shit.
