News: Two Email Providers Self-Destruct to Preserve Privacy

Posted 09 August 2013 - 11:05 PM

Some of y'all will be aware of this already, but it seems worth mentioning:

NY Times

Forbes

In short:
Two U. S. companies providing secure email destroyed their servers this week to protect their customers' data on receipt of or in anticipation of federal search orders.

Ladar Levison, head of one of the two companies is quoted as saying “I would strongly recommend against anyone trusting their private data to a company with physical ties to the United States".

In long:

Lavabit

Interesting from a security and legal standpoint. I learned about it as a result of having a lavabit e-mail.

People are mad on their Facebook.

I don't blame them for this, though. Even the people complaining are saying they used it because it was secure; how secure is it if they will release your information on demand?

This would make me much more likely to use them if they go back up.

Well.. the did shut down without notice. I mean a twelve hour notice wouldn't have been out of the realm of curtsey.

It's a tough call. That notice could have been enough time for their servers to be hacked and the information taken regardless, along with who knows what else. If a court is ruling in favor of forcing them to hand over the information, it would almost certainly apply an exigency exception to hacking their servers.

Riiiiiiiiiight.. because the courts often serve injunctions to stop a business from shutting down there machines so the spooks have time to hack them. Totes sounds legit.

What does that have to do with an injunction? If they gave warning that they would be destroying their data in 12 hours or whatever, they would hack and ask questions later, and almost certainly get court backing after the fact.

Who are "they" The spooks? The Armenians? Swedes? Why would the spooks hack them and then get the courts backing later? When has that ever been the case?

A curtsey sounds really sweet :flowers: but perhaps courtesy was intended. (Sorry, I notice everything!)

Sorry I was going to go for a lame joke related to the Von Trapp family, but was distracted looking at retro color pallets for a drawing I am doing for work..

akin to the 'so long, fare well, etc.. "

I don't know the details of who is requesting the information, so I clearly can't answer that.

But I do believe that it is fairly clear that if there was enough behind this "request" that they chose to shut down, that a warning would have almost certainly resulted in a lot of data being compromised. I don't see how this can be simply dismissed as absurdity.

Okay.. so they were fearing a shut down, take over, occupation of their servers.. they knew that and that is what precipitated them pulling the plug. They have what? 400k plus users and have been operating over nine years. I would figure they, being a well known and popular sort of email port, have been assailed at least once or twice in their life time... and some how a twelve hour grace period would have what - brought the full force of a zerg empire down on them? Okily dokily.

If the NSA is behind it as implied by the article, 12 hours would be more than enough time.
