First website! Critique/help with chrome margins

Posted 10 August 2013 - 05:33 PM

Hello.

Here is my first website

www.that90band.com

It works awesome on firefox. (or at least I think) but the margins on chrome are horrible, and the way it looks with internet explorer is a disaster.

I was wondering if you guys could look at my source code and tell my why the margins are sooooo messed up on chrome.

also if you could tell me what you think, and throw me some suggestions that would be awesome!(just use firefox for that lol)

Any help would be great!

  • If it's a new site why are you using the XHTML DOCTYPE, and the deprecated (obsolete) center tag?
  • You shouldn't be using br-tags to space things. This was a poor practice a number of years ago: use css.
  • IDs must be unique on a page.
  • Block-level elements such as divs should not occur within inline elements like a-tags.

The HTML and CSS validators are linked in my signature.

Value Error : width Unknown dimension 300x

These issues may not be the root cause of your display problem, but you should fix them first.

The website looks fine to me in Chrome? But, I would recommend a few things:

First I would recommend STRONGLY not using the html tags to output paragraphs. Just use the <p> tags. They're easier to take care of in CSS and other things you can do with their properties.

Second, please dont use <br/>'s to space things. Usually, you would want to place important things like blocks of text or images inside divs, so they're easier to manipulate or align. So you could easily align these things with margins if the blocks of text were inside divs or at least spans. I recommend the divs though.

I would also recommend taking the COVER BAND text and creating an image for it for two reasons:
  • Its easier to manage and the quality of the font is not reduced.
  • Plus, you dont accidentally screw anything up and the AA looks messed when skewed.

Also, try taking the text down a bit so we can see the word 'band' more. Try adding some margins so its not so flush with the top. Add a buffer zone above the text. It looks nicer.

But overall? It looks awesome! It's a lot better than people's "first" website. So you're on the right track! Its just the small things. (;
