To continue or not to continue...

Posted 12 August 2013 - 11:52 PM

How does my site looks so far? This will not be the domain I purchase nor the name of the website.
I was just looking for some feedback on how you guys think it's coming along?
Suggestions?
Improvements?
Additions?
Constructive Criticisms?

Be brutally honest guys, do you think I could create a blog website like this and actually gain traffic? This is my first attempt at producing a website with the intention of making advertising profits.

Cheers!

Whoops, thought I copied and pasted the link. New to the forums couldn't figure out how to edit a post.

I want to say I've seen that theme before... but it looks okay.

Can you make money off it - I don't know. I am unclear what the content is or how that will set it apart.

I bet you have! It's a wix theme that I've duplicated but I plan to change it around so it doesn't look so similar.

Somehow one of the the first things I noticed was the title of the page. You need something other than the default 'Untitled Document'.

Not a whole lot I can say as all the links go to a hosting site.

Oh, of course, I haven't even began on the head of the document because I have not chosen a name for the website.
At this point I'm looking for domains.

Code

The HTML

Extract your stylesheet, never leave css in your html pages.

Fix the title

Prefer the <header> tag to a <div id="header">

<img /> is self closing, no need for an end tag.

Pick a consistent tab stop, two spaces tends to be the best.

You don't need that many comments. If your HTML is done well it explains itself, which is known as proper semantics.

Look into the HTML5 elements such as <section>, <article>, and <aside> for content instead of divs.

With the above, most of the CSS classes are unnecessary as you can use child / parent selectors to hit things when done correctly with semantic html.

The span is unnecessary for continue_reading.

Look into the <footer> tag.

...why do you have a span below the footer?

Overall: Clean up the indentation, and learn html5 tags.

The CSS

Learn how to write it yourself. This is far too much copy and paste with hackery around it. The biggest piece of advice I can give you is to learn the shorthand for css selectors like margin, padding, and font.

Again, indentation is an issue. Decrease it a lot, it's going to give you a nightmare scrolling to the right. Two spaces is enough in most any case.

Design

The Background

Too bold for the content, it draws a lot of attention to itself. Make it darker and bring the main content out more.

The banner

The logo needs to be one color, a bold red would work fine. Using an image where you can use CSS styling is a bad move, it increases load times substantially.

The Navigation

The font is far too small, and looks like normal text. Increase the size, make it bold, and change the colors to something like Red.

The Content

The spacing between the banner and the content is far too much, decrease it by at least 50px if not more.

The Font Size

Far too small.

The Article Headers

Far too small, the yellow does not catch my eye, and the padding needs to be increased to keep it away from the edges.

Other than that, there's not much to really say on the design at all.
