To take this job or not...

Posted 18 August 2013 - 07:13 PM

I have a friend who said he can get me a job at his company as a vb.net developer. Starting pay is 50k. The catch is that it's not full-blown application development, more like scripting. He said he has fun at work and it's a great atmosphere with potential to move up.

Is this a good job for someone out of college? I'm worried that this is a bad choice for someone young and it would be hard to find a different job with only scripting in vb.net as experience.

Is This A Good Question/Topic? 0

As opposed to finding a job WITHOUT even that much to put on your resume?

There are plenty of IT jobs for recent college graduates, students definitely have a choice. This is an offer that I consider because of the company. Just not sure about the job.

You must not be in the u.s. Take the job. You can always quit if you don't like it. $50k/yr is a good salary, just about anywhere.

It's a good opportunity at $50k. If you think you can handle a position with that responsibility, and think you're good enough, go for it. A job right out of college with that pay on a CV would look impressive if you want to look for another. Right now, take all the chances you can get.

The fact that you are concerned about your skills is a good sign. Take the job and even if you are slightly behind (you might not be) your attitude will help you catch up.

Depending where you live, 50k is good for most part out of college. Do you have an offer already or not? Just because he said he can get you a position, does not automatically mean you have the job.

If you're worried about the work you're going to do, don't worry. From the looks of it, part of the job seems to involve programming (Scripting is also programming). Which is the same for most development jobs since programming is not 100% of the work you'll do. There's also testing, system documentation, planning, etc.

There aren't a whole lot of places where $50k would be a bad salary salary right out of college for doing VB.NET.

If you want more stuff on your resume then put stuff there. Get a Github account (which everyone should have by now) and just do projects in your spare time. The more publicized the better. Your open source contributions matter to many companies and in several that I have experience with they were sometimes even more important than actual work experience. Startups in particular.

But mcdonalds gives free food! It's totally worth it!!! :smartass:

Yeah I don't see how you're even really debating it. If nothing else, it's $50k a year until you can find a better job and something for the resume.

then again....mcdonalds is like $4k-$6k a year...tough call....tough call.... :/
