What is difficult with developing implementation and support activity

Posted 20 August 2013 - 06:48 AM

I was reading into the SDLC and the last two activities of the SDLC seems straightforward but I'm sure there must be difficulties. In the text I was reading non are listed can anyone expand on what the difficulties may be.

Thanks in advance

It basically broke down what management needs to plan for and expanded on each of the tasks for each activity what to look for and plan for, etc. Maybe I shouldn't be thinking so white and black about it.

Implementation:

Construction software components
Verify and test
Convert data
Train and document
Install the system

Support activities:

Maintain the system
Enhance the system
Support the users

I don't have the experience so I don't really know what can go wrong in the real world when planning or during executing these activities. The book states good practice but I know in the real world nothing ever goes as the book mentions.

.. and which two "last activities" were you referring to? Train/Document and Install, or Enhance and Support?

I'm using the terminology from the book it calls each phase in the SDLC "activities". I think I may using the terminology wrong? But basically what type of factors can deter or effect the implementation and support phases. In the real world what can happen that can wreck or slow down the phase.

type of factors can deter or effect the implementation

What I have seen/experienced: Expected hardware was not in, testing wasn't complete, conflicts with existing systems, conflict with new systems, outages, lack of a rollback strategy, users have no idea how to use the new system/hardware/product, bad implementation date.. etc.

and support phases

What I have seen/experienced: piss poor training of the helpdesk, lack of standardized responses/steps, not enough folk to deal with high volumes, not having dedicated folk for support, having no subject matter experts, etc

And one of the painful things with "Enhance the system" when you've setup a system that has hooks/APIs/interfaces/web services for users to write against is backward compatibility. Unless you are a big company like Apple, or carry enough clout in an IT organization and can say screw the independent developer - upgrade or die, you'll have to deal with either keeping something legacy alive long past its useful life, or be hobbled with an architecture that worked for the 90's, but it's 2013 and there are better ways to do things.
