What OS do you guys program on?

Posted 20 August 2013 - 12:37 PM

I was just watching a jquery video on tekpub and realized how pretty it looked using notepad on a Mac. While I'm a windows user and haven't ever care to dabble in apple. I wondered what OS did you software developers use everyday at work to program on?

You can typically find that information under their profile name or in their profiles.

Windows 98 2nd edition, is the best OS ever. ME isn't bad, but it just doesn't allow me to cut code like '98.

To avoid confusion I meant present tense not past tense let me reiterate:

I wondered what OS do you software developers use everyday at work to program on?

@no2pencil Were you referring to the OS you were using back in the day or do you have some sort of retro pc setup?

You don't know how jealous I am of this setup! I keep pestering my boss to set me up on a phat win98SE dev box but they keep saying "no.. we need not to give you the ultra of the l33t setups for another blade server!". I gently weep.

I apparently am very lucky in comparison to some of the dinosaurs more experienced developers around here. I program almost exclusively on Fedora (Linux). Granted, as long as I have a terminal capable of using SSH I am good and just log in to my actual development machine (Linux again, normally Fedora, but at work our Linux dev servers are Ubuntu).

It's what I use now. Windows 7 or Linux doesn't have shit for compilers when compared to Bloodshed Dev C++ & Turbo C on Windows 98 SE.

GO CONIO OR GO HOME

Ya, the constant compiler crashes, followed by a reboot are real must haves.

Give me back my OS2.

I mostly write code on Linux. I use it at home, and my college uses it exclusively for all Computer Science classes. Even Comp Sci 1 requires it, and thats the typical "computer class" that all students need.

At $WORK I use a Mac, at $HOME I use Linux Mint or OpenBSD.

Dev Tech Stack
--------------

Vim
-rails.vim
-ruby.vim
-ctrlp.vim
-nerdtree.vim (File Directory, though I rarely use it.)
-fugative.vim (GIT in Vim)
-AG.vim (Superpowered grep for programming)
-Solarized theme
ZSH
-Oh my ZSH (Look into it, git branch on the line headers is amazing)
- A lot of Rails related aliases (that I need to source to github already...)
Git
- vimdiff or araxis on merges
TMUX (Currently integrating)

My opinion on Mac? It's nice and all, but I won't use one unless someone buys it for me. My Dev environments are nearly identical between the two.

As I'm getting more into full time rails and js type work, my tool kit will change quite a bit to compensate. Used to be all ops world tools and vim, though I will say vim lasts through much of anything.

Partial topic hijack, OS AND tools you use. That'd make things a bit more interesting.

I've only ever used Windows. I use Visual Studio and Eclipse on it. Yep, none of those fancy things I hear others use.

I did watch my friend use a Mac for a few minutes, I swore from that point I will never touch one.

Windows 7 Pro at work

Windows 8 Pro at home, though I tend to try and keep Linux on an old laptop to mess around with.
