What's your most controversial programming opinion?

Posted 23 August 2013 - 12:31 PM

First of i don't know where to post this topic, here or in Caffeine Lounge

I saw this topic on SO, so i though i would ask the DIC people for their opinion. What do you think about these opinions?

  • Programmers who don't code in their spare time for fun will never become as good as those that do.
  • The only "best practice" you should be using all the time is "Use Your Brain".
  • "Googling it" is okay!
  • Most comments in code are in fact a pernicious form of code duplication.
  • Not all programmers are created equal
  • If you only know one language, no matter how well you know it, you're not a great programmer.

1. I'm all for being the best at what you do but everything in moderation, if coding is starting to interfere with your "normal life"(take that as you like) you need to stop and smell the roses, take a brake, go offline :)/>

3. Googling is not always okay, google brought me here, and if people still tell me to google something i will never get the answers i'm looking for. I would spinning in circles from forum to forum just google, google, google.

5. Indeed, some are more intuitive and break in the knowledge more quickly than other, in actual fact, the performance of one developer can be 10x or even 100x that of another.

6.This is really a question, what is better JackOfAllTrades or being a specialist, i don't have opinion on this because i'm bit biased towards .NET :)/>

What are your answers, experiences?

For those who are not understanding the post because of missing context:

Here's the SO question: What's your most controversial programming opinion?

Quote

So, what contentious opinions do you hold? I'd rather avoid the kind of thing which ends up being pretty religious with relatively little basis (e.g. brace placing) but examples might include things like "unit testing isn't actually terribly helpful" or "public fields are okay really". The important thing (to me, anyway) is that you've got reasons behind your opinions.

A controversial statement? Best I can come up with:

Quote

(Good) programmers are very lazy

..but I don't think it is that controversial. I suppose without the (Good) qualifier it sounds a bit more controversial.

Lazy as in using something already made instead of making it your own?
Like other frameworks, classes etc.

Not a framework so much. Let's say I'm typing some code, but thinking:

Quote

"I'm sure there is an easier way; I shouldn't be typing all this code!"

But, on reflection, I'm not sure if this thought alone qualifies someone as a good programmer. But I suspect it is a common trait.

As far as I can tell this isn't a programming topic but more so a circle drawing contest of who has outrageous ideas regarding programming that typically they cannot express without being attacked... and then express them here, be attacked, and defend yourself.

Okay.. throw in "per say" in there.. It's more of "here's the notion I hold on to that everyone groans or throws bagels at me for, here's my defense, now come at me bro!".

.. but if I am off base on my view then I'll move it elsewhere.

HTML is a programming language. Can non-programmers write you some HTML code? Nope.

Most of my "controversial" opinions are really mostly sides of the typical religious wars and don't really bear repeating.

Frontend programmers are not as good as backend programmers.
