My Google Plus Page?

Posted 31 August 2013 - 02:28 PM

I am trying to increase my social media connections and would like to include my Google Plus page URL on my resume, email footer, forum Profiles, etc.

However, I am not sure what URL to use. There is no explicit setting in my account that says something like, "This is the URL to give out to your friends: XXXXX."
Is that the URL that includes the 20-digit number?
For example, https://plus.google....456789123/posts ?

If so, is there a way to shorten this URL and make it more user-friendly? I know both Facebook and LinkedIn offer an option for creating a vanity URL, that is more human friendly, but so far I have not found the same option for Google Plus.

Am I missing something?

Okay.

Thanks for the suggestion.

It looks like a third-party redirection, or URL-shortening, service, based in Turkey.
Hmmnn... not sure if I am comfortable using yet another third-party service. What if it shuts down one day? How reliable is it? I already have an account with other URL-shortening services (e.g. - bit.ly, snipurl, tinyurl, etc.). I could probably just use one of my existing accounts.

One other option I saw mentioned:
if you own your own website, create a page with a 301 redirect on it, solely for the purpose of redirecting visitors to your Google Plus page. Then use that URL when directing people to your Google Plus page. Of course, if your domain is a long name, you haven't really gained much, except perhaps to provide people a more human-friendly method of navigating to the page.

I know http://gplus.to/ has been around for a while (since the inception of Google+ I believe). Personally, I use it, but I understand your concerns. Signing up for a Bit.ly account and creating a custom URL (for instance, http://bit.ly/MichaelGooglePlus) is just as effective and I don't see Bit.ly going anywhere anytime soon.

Google+ does offer vanity URLs, but right now they are only offered to big brands and influential users: https://support.goog...B&topic=2400106

I've also seen people use the 301 redirect option you mentioned (which is great because you can see the Google Analytics data). I like that for branding purposes as well.

What are you currently using?
